Microsoft has officially finished Windows Phone 7 today. The software giant has officially released Windows Phone 7 to manufacturing (RTM).

The final build and code has been shipped to Microsoft’s hardware and carrier partners to allow them to integrate their own software and services before devices ship later this year. Paul Thurrott notes that there has been several last minute changes to Windows Phone 7 including:

  • Facebook contacts filtering in the People hub
  • Facebook “Like” capability from the People hub
  • Various user interface updates, including a new Search button in the contacts list.

Windows Phone 7 the most thoroughly tested mobile platform the folks at Redmond have ever shipped. According to Microsoft they had nearly ten thousand devices running automated tests daily, over a half million hours of active self-hosting use, over three and a half million hours of stress test passes, and eight and a half million hours of fully automated test passes. Microsoft has had thousands of independent software vendors and early adopters testing Windows Phone 7 and providing feedback.

“We are ready” said Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Windows Phone engineering. “This has been one of the most incredible product development efforts I’ve ever been a part of. Today’s milestone is exciting not just because of what we’ll deliver to customers later this year, but how it sets us up for success over the long term in the mobile space… we’re really just getting started.”

Windows Phone 7 is expected to be available in October for those in Europe and November for those in the US. If you’re interested in more about Windows Phone 7 then please see our in-depth preview.

Back in February, Mozilla released Firefox Mobile for the Maemo platform and was hard at work on a version for Windows Mobile. Now, almost two months later, the browsing giant is throwing in the towel. Here’s what Mozilla Mobile Team Technical Lead, Stuart Parmenter had to say on his blog.

“While we think Windows Phone 7 looks interesting and has the potential to do well in the market, Microsoft has unfortunately decided to close off development to native applications.  Because of this, we won’t be able to provide Firefox for Windows Phone 7 at this time.  Given that Microsoft is staking their future in mobile on Windows Mobile 7 (not 6.5) and because we don’t know if or when Microsoft will release a native development kit, we are putting our Windows Mobile development on hold.”

Without a way for Mozilla to build for Windows Phone 7, which is the future of Windows in the mobile spectrum, the company sees no point in spending the money and resources to continue the project. For now, Firefox for Windows Mobile will be put on the back-burner, hopefully to be re-evaluated at a time when Microsoft releases a proper native development kit. Until then, Mozilla plans to focus its time and effort on the Android and Maemo platforms.

Opera has launched a native beta version of Opera Mini 5 for the Windows Mobile platform today. The browser will support both Windows Mobile 5 and 6. The great part about this being a native app is the power it gives the browser. Opera Mini is now specifically optimized for the platform and free from the shackles of running under Java.

Opera excels at making mobile browser, and this version of Opera Mini is no different. Opera Mini 5 is extremely fast, as it compresses data by up to 90 percent, improving page-load speeds by significant amounts. Opera also notes that this can save you from going over your carrier defined quota for data transfer. Opera Mini 5 also has all the standard bells and whistles that users have come to love. It has tabbed browsing, a password manager, bookmark sync, a download manager, and Speed Dial.

Opera’s VP of Products, Dag Olav Norem, feels that Windows Mobile deserves a better browser than what Microsoft ships pre-installed. You can try the Opera Mini 5 beta by visiting m.opera.com/next from your Windows Mobile device. You can read more about the browser and its features on Opera’s website.

Two days ago, we entertained the posibility of the HTC HD2 getting a Windows Phone 7 Series upgrade. However, Microsoft has officially shot this down. Pocket-lint has received word from Microsoft’s Oded Ran that there are no plans to upgrade the HD2. Not only that, but even devices made from here onward that meet WP7S requirements won’t necessarily be upgraded either. However, all phones that come with WP7S loaded will be able to receive future OS upgrades.

“We’ve received many questions about the upgradability of HTC HD2 and we currently do not have plans to update the HTC HD2 to Windows Phone 7 Series… For Windows Phone 7 Series we are enforcing a strict set of hardware requirements to ensure a consistently great experience for end-users and developers… we cannot confirm that Windows Mobile 6.5 phones that satisfy those requirements will be upgradeable”.

Ron, who is the head of consumer marketing, continued to stress the role Windows Mobile 6.5 (aka Starter Edition) as being an integral part of the Windows Mobile lineup. More WinMo 6.5 phones are expected to ship in the coming months.

Windows Mobile 6.5 represents a significant part of the portfolio family that is Windows Phones. With over 50 phones available around the world today, it offers customers the freedom to choose from among the widest selection of device form factors and price points.”
