On Tuesday Microsoft released Visual Studio 2010 RC and .NET Framework 4.0 RC to MSDN subscribers. Today, the company has made these releases available to the public.

Visual Studio is a development environment that allows developers to create GUI applications along with Windows Forms applications, web sites, web applications, and web services in both native code together with managed code for all platforms supported by Microsoft Windows, Windows Mobile, Windows CE, .NET Framework, .NET Compact Framework and Microsoft Silverlight.

There are no new features in the RC release from beta 2 and Microsoft has focussed on speed improvements. A Microsoft spokesperson stated: “We heard from customers that performance in Beta 2 wasn’t everything they had hoped it would be. The RC released today delivers enhanced performance and is an added milestone to garner even more customer feedback before the final build is released. Specifically, customers will see performance improvements in loading solutions, typing, building and debugging.”

Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4 will launch in cities all over the world on April 12. Major events will be taking place in the UK, China, Malaysia, India, and in the US.

Microsoft said on Monday that it had shipped a Release Candidate (RC) copy of its development software Visual Studio 2010.

Microsoft has confirmed it will be shutting down its’ Popfly tool on August 24, 2009.

In a message to the Popfly blog company official John Montgomery confirmed “unfortunately, on August 24, 2009 the Popfly service will be discontinued and all sites, references, and resources will be taken down. At that time, your access to your Popfly account, including any games and mashups that you have created, will be discontinued.”

A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to TechFlash that the tool was being discontinued due to the current economic climate, “like many companies, the economic situation has caused us refocus and to reevaluate our priorities; while successful and popular, Popfly is not part of our refocused strategy.”

Microsoft is advising Popfly users to visit Microsoft Web Platform Installer to continue web applications development, XNA for Xbox developement and Microsoft’s Visual Studio site for Windows development.

vs2010

One of the biggest questions at Microsoft’s TechEd conference this week — other than the whereabouts of popular speaker and former Microsoft security expert Steve Riley — is where is the beta of Visual Studio 2010.

A number of TechEd attendees have tweeted that they’ve been eagerly awaiting information on the beta of Microsoft’s next version of its development suite, but to no avail.

It sounds from a couple of my tipsters that the Beta 1 releases of VS2010 and .Net 4 are both likely to be made available for download sometime over the next couple of weeks, and possibly as soon as the week of May 18.

Update (May 15): Yes, VS 2010 Beta 1 will be available to MSDN subscribers on May 18, according to one Microsoft blogger. The public will be able to download Beta 1 of VS 2010 Professional, Suite and TFS on May 20.

Microsoft officials already have outlined broadly some of the new functionality expected in the VS2010 release, a product which many are expecting to ship in final form before the end of 2009. At TechEd this week, a few attendees mentioned additional specifics, such as the fact that Microsoft’s concurrent-programming language F# will ship in the VS2010 box, while Iron Python will “ship out of band, like F# does now.”

Another tweeter noted that the “Sharepoint TFS (Team Foundation Server) integration in VS2010 looks cool,” but developers will need an upgrade tool to move old 2008 projects into new templates.

I’ve asked Microsoft for an update on when to expect Beta 1 of VS 2010/.Net 4. If and when I get a response, I’ll add it to this post.

In related news, “Camano,” the testng tool being used and developed by the VS team, now has an official name: Microsoft Test and Lab Manager.
