Office

Microsoft’s upcoming, and long awaited, update to its popular Office software suite has yet to be released, though that hasn’t stopped the company from planning ahead. Office 2010 is scheduled to be available sometime next year, but the Redmond company has said it’s already planning Office 15.

The hints to Office 15 come from an entry on the Access Team Blog, relating to Access 15 and SQL Server. As Greg Lindhorst, guest writer on the blog, posted, “As Office 2010 nears shipping, we are starting to plan Office 15. One area that we are considering improving is our SQL Server support. Based on what I’ve heard from the community, that would be most welcome. Note that we are very early in planning, and considering many possible areas of investment, I unfortunately can’t commit to any actual improvements at this time.” Not much so far, but it shows how far a company (Microsoft, in this case) plans ahead on such an important piece of software, such as Office.

Office 2010 is still in beta, publicly available, in preparation for the release next year. What would you like to see in Office 15 that didn’t quite make it into the 2010 version?

Azure

Microsoft originally announced it’s Azure cloud services and platform at last years PDC.

Azure provides businesses with a set of hosted services from Microsoft that allows developers to build rich web based applications that can scale well. Housed in Microsoft’s data centers, the service was initially released as a Community Technology Preview and free of charge during its testing phase.

Bob Muglia, president of the Server and Tools Business at Microsoft, announced the business and partner model for the company’s Windows Azure platform at the Worldwide Partner Conference in New Orleans today. Microsoft will offer Windows Azure, SQL Azure and .NET Services for purchase through a consumption-based pricing model, allowing partners and customers to pay only for the services that they consume. Microsoft partners also will benefit from special promotional offers and discounts.
