Windows Phone 7 released to manufacturing

Microsoft has officially finished Windows Phone 7 today. The software giant has officially released Windows Phone 7 to manufacturing (RTM).

The final build and code has been shipped to Microsoft’s hardware and carrier partners to allow them to integrate their own software and services before devices ship later this year. Paul Thurrott notes that there has been several last minute changes to Windows Phone 7 including:

  • Facebook contacts filtering in the People hub
  • Facebook “Like” capability from the People hub
  • Various user interface updates, including a new Search button in the contacts list.

Windows Phone 7 the most thoroughly tested mobile platform the folks at Redmond have ever shipped. According to Microsoft they had nearly ten thousand devices running automated tests daily, over a half million hours of active self-hosting use, over three and a half million hours of stress test passes, and eight and a half million hours of fully automated test passes. Microsoft has had thousands of independent software vendors and early adopters testing Windows Phone 7 and providing feedback.

“We are ready” said Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Windows Phone engineering. “This has been one of the most incredible product development efforts I’ve ever been a part of. Today’s milestone is exciting not just because of what we’ll deliver to customers later this year, but how it sets us up for success over the long term in the mobile space… we’re really just getting started.”

Microsoft Office 2010 released to manufacturing (RTM)

Microsoft said on Friday that its new Office suite, due in May for businesses and June for consumers, has reached the released to manufacturing (RTM) milestone.

In a company blog posting, Takeshi Numoto - Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Office, confirmed that Microsoft had hit the RTM milestone. “RTM is the final engineering milestone of a product release and our engineering team has poured their heart and soul into reaching this milestone,” Numoto said. Microsoft also said that 7.5 million people download the beta version of Office 2010, 3 times the number of 2007 beta downloads.

Microsoft is currently running an Office 2010 Technology Guarantee. BlogoFlux revealed Microsoft’s plans for the guarantee program. Customers who purchase Office 2007, or a new PC with Office 2007, and activate it between March 5, 2010 and September 30, 2010 will be offered a free upgrade to Office 2010. Copies will be available online, via download, at no additional cost.

Microsoft also confirmed that Volume License customers with Software Assurance will be able to download the RTM bits on April 27. MSDN and TechNet customers will be able to download Office 2010 RTM on April 22.

Microsoft is holding business launch event for Office 2010 in New York on May 12. Consumers will not be able to purchase the product until June. Although Microsoft officials will not confirm the exact date, BlogoFlux firmly believes this will be June 15. In January Microsoft announced Office 2010 pricing. The professional edition will retail for $499 boxed.  Office 2010 will be released in at least five different flavours, including a free version that includes Microsoft Word and Excel, but comes with limited functionality and includes advertisements. The editions of Office 2010 will include Starter, Home and Student, Home and Business, Professional and Professional Academic.

Office 2010 RTM next month, May 12 for Biz – June 15 for consumers

Microsoft said on Friday that it will release Office 2010 to manufacturing in April and provide businesses with copies of the latest Office suite on May 12.

In a company blog posting, Jevon Fark of Microsoft Office marketing, provided some information on the Office 2010 Technology Guarantee. Last month BlogoFlux revealed Microsoft’s plans for the guarantee program. Customers who purchase Office 2007, or a new PC with Office 2007, and activate it between March 5, 2010 and September 30, 2010 will be offered a free upgrade to Office 2010. Copies will be available online, via download, at no additional cost.

Fark confirmed that Microsoft is on target for an Office 2010 next month. “we’re excited to confirm that Office 2010, SharePoint 2010, Visio 2010 and Project 2010 are on schedule and will release to manufacturing (RTM) next month.”

Office 2010 set to be released on June 15

Windows watcher Paul Thurrott has confirmed that Microsoft plans to release Office 2010 on June 15 2010.

Thurrott made the comments in his weekly WinInfo short takes where he stated “Office 2010 for Windows, meanwhile, will become generally available June 15, 2010.” Microsoft recently released a release candidate version of Office 2010 to technical beta testers. According to company insiders, the software giant plans to Release to Manufacturing (RTM) Office 2010 by the end of March/early April.

In January Microsoft announced Office 2010 pricing. The professional edition will retail for $499 boxed.  Office 2010 will be released in at least five different flavours, including a free version that includes Microsoft Word and Excel, but comes with limited functionality and includes advertisements. The editions of Office 2010 will include Starter, Home and Student, Home and Business, Professional and Professional Academic.
