Sure, we’ve seen plenty of multi-touch implementations on the Microsoft Surface and other Microsoft projects (read Courier), but this one, brought to our attention by Long Zheng of iStartedSomething, breathes new life into the already creative world of multi-touch. While pen and touch each offer their own powerful capabilities, the combination of two presents endless possibilities. Microsoft is calling it “Manual Deskterity”–an obvious pun on “manual dexterity.”

In the video below, you will see Microsoft demoing the use of fingers and a pen at the same time. Notice how the Surface is able to distinguish between the two. In the real world, doing both actions together is a no-brainer. Microsoft is aiming to recreate that natural interaction within its software. Such power will enable users to do what was never before possible in a digital world. This concept would work amazingly with Microsoft’s upcoming Courier–an obvious choice for such an implementation.

According to Microsoft Kitchen, Jeremiah Whitaker, who is a freelance UX designer that’s done some prototype work for the Windows Mobile 7 team, has posted some interesting mockups on his personal site (ascendesign) that seem to be Windows Mobile 7 related. The mockups contain gestures and controls that will, allegedly, be part of the new interface. Whitaker didn’t flat out say that the mockups were for Windows Mobile 7. However, his involvement with the team, plus the comment below, seems to imply that they are.

“NDA dictates I keep this vague. For a leading cell platform I created UX flows of common controls and usages. After client review I created flash demos. Those demo’s were then reviewed and passed on to SectionSeven development to create interactive prototypes. This process allowed for very efficient UX development.”

Whether these gestures and controls will make it into the final release of Microsoft’s highly anticipated mobile OS or not is unknown. What’s clear, is that Microsoft has been seriously working on gestures and their role in mobile technology. You can see gestures such as pinch-to-zoom in the image below. We know that Microsoft has already included such gestures in Windows 7 and the Microsoft Surface. It seems pretty reasonable to think that they’d also include them in Windows Mobile 7.

Microsoft announced the Windows 7 Touch Pack back in May but originally it was meant for OEMs only. Today the company confirmed that it will be offering the Touch Pack for download soon.

The official Touch Pack site states “the Touch Pack comes preinstalled on some multitouch PCs running Windows 7, and will soon be available for download. It’s not included in Windows 7.” A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed the sighting to Neowin but would only say “Microsoft is planning to make it available via download soon but has not confirmed/committed to a timeline.”

Obviously, in order to use these applications, you will need a Windows 7 PC that supports multi-touch. The Touch Pack brings a range of touch-friendly applications, of which we will detail below:

Microsoft Surface Globe:

The first of these applications is called Microsoft Surface Globe. This, as you can imagine, is a multi-touch capable globe (think Google Earth) that uses the Virtual Earth 3D engine to display a rotatable 3D version of the world. You can visit various locations and regions, get information about some areas, and bookmark your favorites. To add to this, some cities are even constructed in 3D, providing a very realistic and detailed experience. If you want to watch a quick video of this in action, please head to this link. Also, there’s a screenshot of this below.

Microsoft Surface Collage:

Next up, we have the Microsoft Surface Collage. This tool allows you to choose a gallery of photos, and then move them around and scale them however you please. If you’ve watched a video of Microsoft Surface before, you’ll have an idea of how this works. Once you’ve got an arrangement that you like, you can choose to save it as an image then use it as a desktop wallpaper. Again, a screenshot is included.

Microsoft Surface Lagoon:

Microsoft Surface Lagoon is a very interesting looking application. It is, essentially, a screensaver for your computer that you can interact with using your hands via multi-touch technology. It depicts an underwater scene with sand, water (of course), and fish. By interacting with it, you can have fish gather around you and also run your fingers through the virtual water.

Microsoft Blackboard:

Microsoft Blackboard is another rather intriguing piece of software. It is a puzzle game, that uses simulated physics combined with multi-touch to get the user to solve it. You use gestures to create seesaws, fans and gears that can all be resized and moved around. Everything is pieced together on a virtual blackboard (hence the name), and the goal is to get balloons and balls to a lightbulb.

Microsoft Rebound:

Microsoft Rebound is a game that is played against friends or AI, which appears to be somewhat similar to Air Hockey. The aim is to “use your fingers to propel a ball and annihilate your opponent” whilst playing in an electrified court.

Microsoft Garden Pond:

Microsoft Garden Pond is another game, though this one has a more relaxing tone to it. The idea is to guide some origami creations to peaceful areas of a pond, or direct them around using your hands to complete set goals. To move the origami, you interact with the water, making ripples.

New Zune HD games released

Last week Microsoft rolled out a v4.3 firmwave update for the Zune HD which amongst other improvements added support for 3D games. Today Microsoft has released 6 new games for the Zune HD according to HelloFromEurope.

Amongst the games is the highly anticipated PGR: ferrari edition and 3D bowling and 3D skate games. According to Microsoft:

“The new games take advantage of Zune HD’s beautiful multi-touch OLED screen and accelerometer and some (Project Gotham Racing: Ferrari Edition, Audiosurf Tilt and Vans Sk8: Pool Service) utilize the powerful NVIDIA Tegra processor to deliver immersive, 3D gaming to Zune HD.”

The games are available in the marketplace to download for free, as with other Zune apps they also feature a short ad at start-up.
