Apple announced today during their live stream broadcast about the upcoming iOS 4.1 for the iPhone and iPod touch.

The new improvements include fixes for a lot of security issues, bugs and adds a lot of additional features. iOS 4.1 will include GameCenter, which allows you and your friends to play games together by sending invites, which notify you in-game.

Among the new options, is Apple’s HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology. The new addition to iOS 4.1 takes three photos, one under exposed, and another over exposed. The software algorithm overlays the images, allowing you to view more detail in each image. Users will get a chance to select which photo they like better, the standard photo, or the HDR image.

Apple also announced iOS 4.1 will be available next week on iTunes, and is a free upgrade.

Apple demonstrated and showed off iOS 4.2. iOS 4.2 will be available for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, the first 4.x update for the iPad since it’s launch in April. The update will bring functions like printing and AirPlay, so you can stream your video and audio right over WiFi. iOS 4.2 is scheduled for release in November 2010.

Joining the ever-increasing list of applications to go cross-platform, Adobe has updated its free Photoshop Express application to include support for Android and the iPad – although it is yet to be updated for the iPhone 4’s higher-resolution display.

For those of you that aren’t aware of Photoshop Express, it’s a simple image editing application that’s designed to give users basic Photoshop features – such as cropping, a touch-up tool, color effects (including black and white effects) and filters – and it’s available for free. Photoshop Express also allows users to store images online at Photoshop.com, or you can choose to directly upload images to sites such as Facebook, Flickr, Picasa and Photobucket.

The applications are part of Adobe’s Photoshop.com ecosystem, which accommodates users of all experience levels, and is presumably aimed at encouraging those users to eventually purchase Adobe’s paid products. For those interested in editing images on their PC, Photoshop.com also offers the Photoshop Online Editor and Organizer, which is a slightly more advanced version of Adobe’s Photoshop Express mobile applications.

Photoshop Express can be downloaded via the App Store / Marketplace on your Apple or Android device now.

iLounge is reporting that they have inside information about brand new models for the iPods, iPhones and iPads from Apple. These products are said to be releasing in late 2010 and early 2011.

The rumored details that there is going to be new iPods on sale as early as this month and as late as next month. There will be 3 new revisions for the music players. One of which is a new version of the iPod Nano, another is a revision of the iPod touch which may incorporate the new changes in the iPhone 4, and another is a 1.7” touchscreen replacement for the iPod Shuffle.

iLounge is also claiming new information about an upcoming iPad mini, with a screen that may be as small as 7”, they have created a mock up image which you can see below. As well as this, they are stating that Apple has moved the release date of the new iPhone forward because of the antennae issues. It is said to be releasing as early as January and will be the full fifth generation iPhone.

Lastly, they are reporting that their source has info on the new iPhone 4 bumpers. These bumpers will be less expensive version of the current bumpers, to replace the current ones in September. This way saving more money, but still supplying the consumer with a free fix for the issue involving the antenna.

These must be taken with a ‘grain of salt’ as iLounge said, but if they are true, we will be seeing the new iPods very soon.

Apple iOS 4.0 released

Apple has released their next big firmware update for the iPhone and iPod touch, excluding first generations, with loads of new features, including multitasking.

Although the UI hasn’t changed too much since the release of the first firmware, Apple has made huge improvements to the functionality and support for the mobile operating system, including copy and paste in 3.0 and now multitasking in 4.0.  Apple even gave the new operating a new name, dubbed iOS 4.0, for support for iPhone, iPod touch and the iPad.

New Features
The iOS 4.0 will support multitasking, allowing for multiple applications to be run at the same time.  The long awaited feature will be native to the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 4 but will not be supported on the iPhone 3G.  Users will be able to run applications in the background while using another app, receiving updates and notifications without having the application displayed.

Multitasking will also support fast switching, allowing users to see a list of applications already running in the background, and select which ones to launch.  Users will be able to play music in the background while surfing the Internet.

iOS 4.0 will also support wallpaper images, something only previously available to jailbroken phones.  Users will be able to use the same lock screen wallpaper behind their icons, but will only be supported on the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, and not the iPhone 3G.

The next version of the operating system will also support folders, allowing you to sort your applications into folders, removing the clutter on your home screen.  The iPhone will also have a native games folder, displaying all your games with a touch of the folder.

The Mail.app is getting a big update, unified mailboxes.  The new unified email inbox will allow you to add your gmail, hotmail, exchange and any other accounts into a threaded inbox.  The unified mailboxs will also support multiple exchange accounts and fast inbox switching.

Camera and Video
Only available for the iPhone 4, iMovie allows you to capture and output 720p at 30fps.  The software allows you to splice, merge, transition, titles, themes and add photos for given effect.  Geolocation is also included, to remember where and when you filmed your video.

iMovie will sell for $4.99 in the AppStore.

Search
Apple has also included Bing as one of the default search engines for Safari.  You can now choose between Google, Yahoo or Bing.

iBooks
Apple is expanding its iBooks market, adding a PDF reader (sorry, no Adobe!), allowing you to browse the iBookStore right from your iPhone.  The online book store is accessible wireless through your iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, allowing you to purchase and download a book.  If you have previously purchased it on another device, you can redownload it free of charge.

iAd
Apple has introduced iAd for developers, allowing them to replace AdMob, currently acquired by Google, inside of their applications.  Apple developed a solution for all developers to include advertisements inside their applications.  iAds will launch on July 1st for all iOS 4 devices.

Download
To download iOS 4.0, install iTunes 9.2 and connect your iPhone or iPod touch to your PC or Mac and click Update.

Jailbreaking
Anyone who relies on Ultrasn0w to obtain service on their iPhone 3G or 3GS, the iPhone Dev Team have released Redsn0w 0.93 for iOS 4.0 and Ultrasn0w for baseband 05.13.04 via Cydia.

Update: This latest build is NOT identical to the GM seed released to developers earlier in the month. The build number is identical but the copy released to the public does not include the game center and includes some new bug fixes.
