New Zune HD games released

Last week Microsoft rolled out a v4.3 firmwave update for the Zune HD which amongst other improvements added support for 3D games. Today Microsoft has released 6 new games for the Zune HD according to HelloFromEurope.

Amongst the games is the highly anticipated PGR: ferrari edition and 3D bowling and 3D skate games. According to Microsoft:

“The new games take advantage of Zune HD’s beautiful multi-touch OLED screen and accelerometer and some (Project Gotham Racing: Ferrari Edition, Audiosurf Tilt and Vans Sk8: Pool Service) utilize the powerful NVIDIA Tegra processor to deliver immersive, 3D gaming to Zune HD.”

The games are available in the marketplace to download for free, as with other Zune apps they also feature a short ad at start-up.

iPhone password revealing bug

A user on Twitter has posted a message about a potentially nasty bug found on the iPhone and iPod touch firmware. This user, rpetrich, discovered the exploit, which can reveal users passwords on the devices, according to ModMyi.com.

The bug only works in certain scenarios and doesn’t pose a risk to users everywhere, unless somebody within arm reach gets a hold of your iPhone or iPod touch. The bug can be exploited in almost every available application that stores passwords; this includes your saved email account passwords.

The bug can reveal all characters, except the very first character in the password field. That is unless a user places a random character at the beginning of the password, than all characters can be revealed. The trick works when a password field is present with a saved password in it, a user can delete one character at a time, starting from right to left and shake the phone, press “undo typing” to reveal the hidden character.

This trick seems to only be present in firmware 2.0 and 3.0, but is apparently patched in the recently released 3.1 firmware.

This video demonstrated how the trick is possible:

Apple has announced the release of iPhone and iPod Touch firmware 3.1, available for download later today. The free download, for both iPhone and iPod Touch 3.0 users, is said to improve battery life.

The 3.1 firmware will improve video editing on the iPhone 3GS, that won’t overwrite the original clip when editing videos, preventing the loss of the original film. The new developer API’s allows third-party applications access to the videos and edit them, without having to use Apple’s editing tools for the iPhone 3GS. The update is said to increase the boot time of devices. The device will now vibrate when moving icons around to different locations.

Apple also included a “Fraud Protection” toggle switch for browsing, now available under the settings for Safari. The firmwave update allows Voice Control over Bluetooth now. Users can also organize their icons through iTunes without having to move them around on their device.

AT&T users will get an update to profile 4.2, but many users will still need to wait till September 25 before using their MMS feature. Apple also updated their modem firmware to 5.08.01. The update also has improvements to OpenGL and Quartz.

The 3.1 iPhone and iPod Touch firmware is available for download with iTunes 9.

With more and more coverage of the latest iPhone firmware 3.0, the secret about Apple’s new iPhone hardware are becoming more a reality without the official details or announcements from Apple itself.

Many developers have managed to get their hands on the latest iPhone firmware 3.0 for development, and unlocked a lot of features thus far. One nice feature is having a percentage battery indicator on the top right of your iPhone to tell you just how low your battery is becoming.
