Microsoft has revealed its new social media tool called Spindex.  The idea is that the new tool will be able to take all of your social media connections and display them on one page from popular services like Twitter, Facebook, Bing, and soon to be many more services.

From Spindex’s landing page, “Spindex allows you to access and interact with your social networks, see trends from your friends, and see related info from Bing on literally everything you click on. Spindex proactively finds useful articles and information based on your interest in your friends’ messages and comments. It lets you find out more about the topics that your friends and feeds are talking about in one click – so you can jump into the conversation.

Make sense of your social overload, open your personalized Spindex page, and find out at a glance what topics are hot in your social world. You can also keep track of the things you are remembering via Evernote – right inside of your Spindex page. Spindex is not just a social reader – as you browse your friends’ updates, Spindex continually suggests related content from Bing – giving you better insight into the topics and trends spinning around you”

The idea, in a nut shell, will combine all of your favorite social media websites and display them on a single page. This should save you time and hopefully give you better access to all of your favorite websites.  While the service seems promising, implementation will be key to keeping the flood of information organized.

The service is being rolled out to only those who attend the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco, but will be rolled out later to the general public.

TheNextWeb is reporting that at Facebook’s F8 developer conference, Microsoft and Facebook announced the beta release of Docs.com. The site is built on, what seems to be, a stripped down version of Microsoft’s upcoming Office 2010 Web Apps platform, and can be used to create and share Office documents with Facebook friends. The service can be used for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents.

“Now you can discover, create, and share Microsoft Office documents with your Facebook friends. Built using Microsoft Office 2010 – Docs for Facebook lets you work from just about anywhere with the familiar Office experience”

Docs.com is part of Microsof’ts FUSE Labs, which is centered around creating rich, online, social experiences. The site seems to be fairly functional, though it’s still in beta and should not be relied upon as your primary office suite. It’s interesting to note, that according to the FAQ, only one person can edit a document at a time. This means that although it’s a social experience, it’s not an actual collaboration tool. Google Docs still has the upper hand in this category, as will Office Web Apps when it’s released.

It’s unclear what kind of integration, if any, this site will have with Office Web Apps when it’s released. After looking around the site, there doesn’t seem to be any mention of SkyDrive storage or anything like that. For all we know, the service may store all of your documents on Facebook and its servers, making it a completely separate entity from Microsoft’s upcoming offering.

Facebook Lite discontinued

Facebook today announced through their fan page they have discontinued the “Lite” version of the site:

Thanks to everyone who tried out Facebook Lite. We’re no longer supporting it, but learned a lot from the test of a slimmed-down site. If you used Lite, you’ll now be taken to the main Facebook.com site.

Introduced last Fall 2009, Facebook Lite was intended for users with slower connections and computers. The minimized version stripped down the interface to its bare essentials in order to speed up loading and fit within smaller display resolutions.

It is not yet clear why they chose to discontinue the service, though indications point to extraneous costs in maintaining two versions of the site (in addition to their mobile site).

At Twitter’s Chirp developer conference, company co-founder Biz Stone revealed that there are currently over 105 million registered Tweeters on Twitter. The exact number is currently pinned at 105,779,710. This figure was revealed in a presentation slide at Chirp. In comparison, Facebook boasts four times that number of registered users, at 400 million users, despite being only two years older than Twitter.

Stone also revealed that the site handles 600 million search requests per day, or 19 billion search requests per month in comparison to 90 billion search requests via Google. Twitter is currently adding about 300,000 users per day.
