As we reported two weeks ago, Microsoft has been working on a new social website called Docs.com.  Built using Microsoft Office 2010, users can upload, create, edit and share Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents with friends and family on Facebook.

The online social Office lets your Facebook friends – when users login through Facebook Connect – connect with your shared documents, which can be posted on your wall.  Docs.com lets the user set the level of privacy, on per-file bases, so you can hide files from view, or allow some or all of your friends to just view or edit files with you.  Unlike Office 2010, only one user can edit a document at a time.

Docs.com includes the same ribbon found in Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint, offering users the same experience online, as they would on the desktop version.   Although Docs.com is still in beta, and may add more functionality in the future, the experience is flawless.

Docs.com is completely free to sign up and use – using your Facebook credentials – giving users an easy way to create, edit and share documents with everyone.

Microsoft Office 2010 for Windows has already RTM (Release to Manufacturer) and is available on TechNet and MSDN, available in retail in June, but Office for Mac 2011 will be in stores this holiday season, according to the Office team’s tweet.

Office for Mac won’t come with all the components that come with what Office Professional Plus for Windows has to offer, but will support Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

This will be the first time Outlook will be available on the Mac, offering similar functionality and appearance, including a Mac inspired theme ribbon, offering users the same experience as Outlook 2010 for Windows.

Office for Mac 2011 will also allow for multiple document editing, so users can edit the same document at the same time, without getting a lockout notice.  Office for Mac will include document sharing with other Mac and Windows office users, through SharePoint, SkyDrive and web apps.

Microsoft said on Friday that its new Office suite, due in May for businesses and June for consumers, has reached the released to manufacturing (RTM) milestone.

In a company blog posting, Takeshi Numoto - Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Office, confirmed that Microsoft had hit the RTM milestone. “RTM is the final engineering milestone of a product release and our engineering team has poured their heart and soul into reaching this milestone,” Numoto said. Microsoft also said that 7.5 million people download the beta version of Office 2010, 3 times the number of 2007 beta downloads.

Microsoft is currently running an Office 2010 Technology Guarantee. BlogoFlux revealed Microsoft’s plans for the guarantee program. Customers who purchase Office 2007, or a new PC with Office 2007, and activate it between March 5, 2010 and September 30, 2010 will be offered a free upgrade to Office 2010. Copies will be available online, via download, at no additional cost.

Microsoft also confirmed that Volume License customers with Software Assurance will be able to download the RTM bits on April 27. MSDN and TechNet customers will be able to download Office 2010 RTM on April 22.

Microsoft is holding business launch event for Office 2010 in New York on May 12. Consumers will not be able to purchase the product until June. Although Microsoft officials will not confirm the exact date, BlogoFlux firmly believes this will be June 15. In January Microsoft announced Office 2010 pricing. The professional edition will retail for $499 boxed.  Office 2010 will be released in at least five different flavours, including a free version that includes Microsoft Word and Excel, but comes with limited functionality and includes advertisements. The editions of Office 2010 will include Starter, Home and Student, Home and Business, Professional and Professional Academic.
