End of the road for Get a Mac ads?

It seems that Steve Jobs and company are finally growing tired of their Get a Mac advertising campaign. Justin Long, the actor that regularly plays the role of the Mac in the commercials, has revealed to the A.V. Club that Apple is moving on:

AVC: What’s the status on those Apple commercials?

JL: You know, I think they might be done. In fact, I heard from John, I think they’re going to move on. I can’t say definitively, which is sad, because not only am I going to miss doing them, but also working with John. I’ve become very close with him, and he’s one of my dearest, greatest friends. It was so much fun to go do that job, because there’s not a lot to it for me. A lot of it is just keeping myself entertained between takes, and there’s no one I’d rather do it with than John.

Apple’s Get a Mac commercials were started back in 2006 by advertising agency Media Arts Lab as the successor to Apple’s Switcher ads. The long campaign characterized PCs and Macs through respective actors John Hodgman and Justin Long.

Microsoft has a lot riding on its upcoming launch of Windows 7. With Vista burned by bad reviews, user errors, and a general vibe of negativity, it needs Windows 7 to replace Windows XP as the next rock solid platform.

Posted below are some upcoming advertisements for the Windows 7 campaign where Microsoft hopes to show off some of the highlights of the new platform, according to istartedsomething.com. Each advertisement shows off a different feature in a unique way that directly address negativity received over its previous “The Wow is Now” campaign for the launch of Vista. Microsoft received criticism that the Vista campaign didn’t show off any of the features of Vista which lead to more confusion among consumers.

The videos are conceptual TV spots that may or may not make it to actual television but they do give a clear indication on potential themes for Microsoft’s campaign.

Apple has begun to air two new “Get a Mac” ads that continue to target Microsoft’s “Laptop Hunters” ad campaign which has directly attacked Apple’s higher prices for PC’s. These ads try to quell the idea that Mac’s cost more and try to point out, yet again, that Mac’s have “superior” functionality and quality.

One of the new ad’s called “Top of the Line” features Patrick Warburton – well known for his portrayal of David Puddy from the Seinfeld Sitcom. Top of the Line focuses on potential viruses and other “headaches” that may affect PC’s, but not Macs. The second ad, called “Surprise” was also posted today featuring a similar message.

Apple is only a few days away from the launch of Snow Leopard, on August 28th, it’s latest and greatest operating system that features 64-bit capability, is faster and leaner, offers exchange support and is more accessible than ever, and it’s not a surprise that these ads appear at this close to the release.

In recent days, Apple has complained to Microsoft about these new Hunters advertisements, claiming the ads are incorrect and inaccurate. As of June 8, 2009, Apple has lowered the prices of their Macbook Pro and increased the RAM from 2GB to 4GB with the starting retail price of $1499.

We could possibly see a response “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” ad in the coming weeks to combat the Hunters ads, only if Apple is ready for an advertisement commercial war with Microsoft.
